US citizens enjoy playing at online casinos just as much as their European counterparts, but the authorities in the US seem determined to stop them doing so.
The latest move in an ongoing battle between online casinos and the American government came to a head on 15th April 2011. The date already has been dubbed 4/11 in some quarters and Black Friday in others and it is the date on which the US government closed down four of the major online casinos.
They managed to do this by seizing the domain names of these sites despite the fact that they are based offshore and they thought that was enough, however, they certainly underestimated the resourcefulness of US online gamblers. Many players are also struggling to recover their funds, though there has been a statement from the federal authorities that they will receive back any money that is tied up in those sites.
The first that the players knew about the ban was when they attempted to log into their favourite online casino sites; they were faced with a notice that said “This domain name has been seized by the FBI.” which must have been a little disturbing.
Gambling online has always been a big issue in the USA, which is strange for a country in which real bricks and mortar casinos are an established part of their lifestyle. There is no evidence that gambling online is any more risky than any other form of gambling. In fact the real outcome of their anti-online gambling laws is that the government is missing out on a valuable source of tax revenues.
